Richard Rorty (New York, October 4, 1931–Palo Alto, California, June 8, 2007) was an American theorist and philosopher. With appointments at Princeton University, Virginia University, and Stanford University, he had a long academic career. Rorty was pessimistic about the prospect of using linguistic analysis to turn theory into an exact science. His main work, Philosophy and the Mirror of Reality, was published in 1979 in which he distinguishes himself from the scientific approach. He recommended a type of pragmatism instead.
